How to choose

Both tours tackle the same route, Canal de les Dames on the Montserrat massif, but the experience diverges sharply at the price point. Pyrenees Extrem delivers a 3h session at 35 €, rated Sporty, meaning you'll move at pace on the iron rungs with a guide who speaks Catalan, Spanish or English. Guies de Muntanya de Montserrat charges 80 € for the same 3h at an "Occasionally sporty" level, a deliberate slowdown that suits first-timers who want more instruction and breathing room on the exposed sections. Pick Pyrenees Extrem if you're already comfortable with heights and want maximum value. Go with Guies de Muntanya de Montserrat if this is your first time clipping into a via ferrata and you want a guide who will pace the ascent around your comfort level.

Frequently asked questions

How exposed is Canal de les Dames on Montserrat?
The route follows a vertical crack in Montserrat's conglomerate rock face, with sections where your feet leave the wall and your full weight transfers to the cable and iron rungs. It's one of the more committing lines in the area, which is why both operators list it at Sporty or above.
Do I need prior via ferrata experience?
For the Pyrenees Extrem tour (Sporty level), some comfort with heights and physical effort is strongly recommended. The Guies de Muntanya de Montserrat tour (Occasionally sporty) is explicitly designed to be accessible to motivated beginners, with guides from a mountain guiding federation.
What is the most intense moment on the route?
The crux of Canal de les Dames is its sustained vertical section where the iron steps are spaced further apart and the exposure to the drop below is at its maximum. Both guides build the session around this section, so you won't reach it cold.
Is 3 hours enough to complete the route?
Both tours are scheduled at exactly 3h, which covers the climb, the via ferrata circuit and the descent. The Sporty-rated tour will move faster through the technical sections; the Occasionally sporty tour uses the same time with more pauses for instruction.
Can I do this tour without speaking Spanish?
Yes. Pyrenees Extrem guides speak English, Spanish and Catalan. Guies de Muntanya de Montserrat guides speak English, French and Spanish. Both tours are fully accessible to English-speaking participants.

Practical info

Season

May – October

Equipment

Both tours provide the harness, helmet and via ferrata lanyard (Y-shaped with two shock-absorbing lanyards). Wear approach shoes or hiking boots with a firm sole, and bring a light layer since Montserrat's elevation creates wind chill even in summer. The Sporty-rated tour lasts a full 3h of physical effort, so a small hydration pack with at least one litre of water is essential.

Getting there

Both meeting points are in El Bruc, roughly 50 km northwest of Barcelona: Pyrenees Extrem meets at Masia Vinyanova on C/ Montserrat S/N, while Guies de Muntanya de Montserrat meets at the Ajuntament Del Bruc Town Hall on Bruc del Mig 55. Both are reachable by car from Barcelona via the A-2 motorway.
